For our 2025 Retreats we are going to be tackling garment sewing with the beginner friendly One Yard Minimalist Top. Designed by KZ Stevens this clever pattern uses yardage strips instead of pattern pieces and can be completely hand sewn which makes it perfect for our Slow Stitching retreats (we will be bringing a machine or two to speed up one small step if required).
As well as making the actual top we have each come up with three different methods of embellishing the tops for our individual tutorial sessions. Jo will be teaching needle turn applique and chain stitch embroidery with a simple but effective trailing flower motif, Lynne will be showing you how to use reverse applique to personalise your item with initials or text and Karen will be sharing the amazing technique of couching with a really striking modern design.
Don’t want to make a top? No problem, instead you can use the embellishing techniques to create a set of beautiful napkins!
We are delighted to be returning to the Harewood estate in the heart of Yorkshire for our 2025 retreats. The retreats will be taking place over three nights and are designed to be a retreat in the real sense of the world – a chance to get away from the outside world, slow down and unwind.
Our Sewing Retreats have an emphasis on mindful slow stitching and exploring your creativity. The demos and guided tutorials for 2025 will have a relaxed, intimate feel and encompass a range of techniques (TBA).
Bring along your latest projects to work on, start something new or learn skills with Karen, Lynne and Jo with an exclusive project designed especially for the retreat.
Please note that the same project will be taught at all three of our 2025 retreats.
We want this retreat to be relaxed, nurturing and full of joy. All three hosts are experienced and generous teachers who will help and encourage you to get the most from your sewing and creativity.
We will be discouraging the use of sewing machines in the group hub however these can easily be accommodated for use in your cottage if you’d like to bring one.
The Location
Harewood is one of the Treasure Houses of England. The House was built in the 18th century and has art collections to rival the finest in Britain. A former Royal Household, it sits in 1000 acres of land offering great views and access to amazing landscapes designed by Lancelot “Capability” Brown. A free pass to the house and grounds (worth up to £17.50) is included with your retreat!
We hope to make the most of the stunning scenery with some organised group walks through the beautiful fields, woodlands and the magical Himalayan Gardens during our long weekend.
The Accommodation
Most of the accommodation will be in 2 to 3 bedroom cottages set within a terraced complex with sweeping views of cherry trees, grass fields and woodland. The cottages each have their own unique history, from worker cottages to ancient hunting lodges. These Grade II Listed buildings ooze character and have been stylishly, luxuriously and very comfortably renovated.
Some accommodation will be in the larger house alongside your hosts and where we will be gathering for sewing, tuition and some meals. This also features a large garden area with patio seating and a hot tub!
There is a 10 - 15 minute walk between the accommodation cottages and the larger house that we will be using for sewing and meals. This can either be walked or driven (depending on weather).
All of the retreat places are for a double bed in a single occupancy room with a choice between en-suite or shared bathroom. For the shared bathroom option you will not be sharing with more than one other person.
The accommodation at Harewood is fitted out with sustainability in mind. The cottages are heated by renewable energy and complimentary electric car charging points are accessible for all guests.
The Timetable
Officially the retreat runs from 4pm Friday to 10am Monday or 4pm Tuesday to 10am Friday.
However for all three retreats we will be having our lunch at a gorgeous café on the estate at 12 noon on the first day of each retreat and would welcome any retreaters who wish to come early to join us (lunch on this day is not included in the retreat price). This will be followed at 2pm by a group visit to Harewood House itself with the visitor pass included as part of your retreat package.
The Food
We are putting a huge emphasis on good quality, sustainable food for these retreats with an exciting mixture of evening meals including a trip ‘out’ to a neighbouring venue and a barbecue!
The Harewood Food & Drink Project will be taking care of our catering:
“We are on a mission to leverage Harewood as a foodie force for good, creating a sustainable food system for the future. This is (almost!) zero miles, (almost!) zero waste food you can feel good about. Food with passion and provenance.
Harewood is blessed with incredible produce;
- Stunning varieties of heirloom fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices from Harewood’s historic Walled Garden – all grown using organic, traditional and environmentally friendly methods;
- Meat from our livestock – Highland Cattle, Aberdeen Angus, Hebridean Black Sheep, Red & Fallow Deer; all low intensity grazed with minimal human intervention, using the highest welfare standards, using regenerative farming methods to ensure all meat is farmed sustainably and in harmony with the land;
- Harewood is blessed with a diverse range of wild foods foraged on the Estates 4500 acres; wild garlic, elderflower, mushrooms, blackberries and walnuts feature heavily for us.
It’s our commitment to, wherever possible, use produce sourced from Harewood across all that we do. What we can’t source from here, we work with a group of carefully selected local independent suppliers who share our ethos and values.”
